A Reporter's Journey Between Idealism and Disillusionment

Gerardo Fortino Madagascar

The Task of Failing with a Cheerful Spirit

"Keep failing with a cheerful spirit." This quote by Robert Stevenson might seem out of place in the fast-paced world of journalism and reportage photography, but for me, it has defined a professional and personal journey full of highs and lows. In an era of fleeting successes and constant quest for approval, I proclaim myself a champion of failures, a master of the cheerful spirit, always driven by a restless pursuit of meaning and truth.

The Solitude of the Storyteller

Despite my apparent successes and the easily woven superficial relationships, a persistent sense of dissatisfaction accompanies me. This deep-rooted loneliness, masked by an extroverted sociability, drives my relentless quest for authentic stories, experiences that can fill that void, and truths hidden behind the facade of everyday life.

The Dilemma of Voluntourism and Aid

My direct experience with the phenomenon of voluntourism and aid work, particularly in Africa, has revealed how good intentions can turn into irreparable harm. I have observed how streams of money intended for aid have often fueled corruption, wars, and stimulated the flight to an illusory European hope. This contrasting reality urges me to reflect on the true essence of aid: a complex system that, instead of emancipating, perpetuates dependencies and imbalances.

Reporter: Reflections on a Contradictory World

The confrontation with realities where aid turns into control, where idealism clashes with the harsh reality of corruption and manipulation, has led me to deep reflections on our society. Media narratives, international aid, awareness campaigns often seem parts of a system that, rather than resolving issues, maintains the status quo, fueling a vicious cycle of dependency and exploitation.

My journey through journalism and documentary photography is not just about seeking powerful stories or images, but an attempt to understand and, hopefully, positively influence the complex social and environmental fabric of our world. It's a path that alternates between moments of disillusionment and hope, where every failure and success contributes to building a broader narrative, an invitation not to settle for appearances, but to always seek the truth hidden behind the image, behind the story.

In this context, my role as a reporter transforms: no longer just a witness, but an active storyteller, committed to unveiling the contradictions of our time, stimulating critical reflection, and perhaps encouraging change. It's a journey I invite everyone to embark on, knowing that every story, every image, every word can be a small step towards greater understanding and, ultimately, towards a better world.
