Healthcare Workers Worldwide: A Deep Reflection on Our Humanity

Claudio Scatola Healthcare Workers Worldwide

Healthcare Workers Worldwide

Is the human being, if we can call it that, truly a human being? Does conscience really matter in things? An old Peruvian poet once said in one of his stories, a phrase later quoted by Father Alex Zanotelli: "when I was born, perhaps God was sick." Perhaps it is true; faith, the strong belief in something, inevitably falters in the face of the unjust death of those who lack the strength and ability to defend themselves.

The Strength of the Armed Minority

Why does the vast minority of the world manage to frighten the majority? Because they have weapons, weapons that create misery, death, and injustice in the name of resources, in the name of peace, in the name of that unequivocal recognition of an enemy, of a person different from us. Because if you have an enemy, then you must defend yourself, you must act in some way. But does the enemy really exist? Is there really this great enemy, or is it nothing more than the greatest invention of mankind?

The Paradoxes of War

Do you know how many wars there are in the world? How many people die every day in the silence of the forgotten? They die waiting for those 9 euros a month from sponsorship, which often does nothing but fuel a corrupt system. According to current estimates, there are over 50 armed conflicts ongoing worldwide, involving millions of people and causing countless casualties (Global Data and Statistics | Data Pandas). Global military spending surpassed $1.9 trillion in 2023, with the U.S. military leading with a budget of over $800 billion (Uppsala Universitet) (ACLED Data). Each American soldier costs an average of $50,000 a year. The total number of war casualties in the world is estimated at over 120 million people from 1945 to today. Children, in particular, suffer greatly: about 200 million children worldwide suffer from malnutrition, 50 million of whom are severely malnourished.

How many times have we stopped to think: we were born in the fortunate part of the world thanks to a random shot of sperm in the right place. Sometimes I wonder if I had been born there, where today help is needed, where today people live between a package of medicine and one of rifles.

I have decided to support Healthcare Workers Worldwide, not because they are a large NGO, but because I have felt firsthand that sense of anger that I still carry inside. Acting in the emergency of those dying from malnutrition is a duty, a duty that we all as human beings should take on, because it is right, because it is healthy not to forget those who live there today..

The Malnutrition Crisis

🛑⚠️ MALNUTRITION ALERT

From January to June, Healthcare Workers Worldwide treated approximately 4,830 malnourished children, many of whom were admitted to their hospital center in Congo, in the Kivu region. "Unfortunately, we are witnessing an unprecedented spike in child malnutrition. Since 2023, the nutritional crisis has become truly alarming," says Claudio Scatola, president of Healthcare Workers Worldwide. "We are trying to respond to this emergency with ready-to-use therapeutic food, aiming to provide adequate nutrition to our young patients with moderate malnutrition to prevent their conditions from worsening."

A World of Contradictions

Why is the world like this? In the DRC, it's been sixty years of war, in the silence of the whole world because everyone loves precious jewels, everyone loves receiving a ring with a beautiful diamond on their finger while their future partner asks them to marry them. We are like this, we humans are like this, but we must somehow make a difference. That's why I support Healthcare Workers Worldwide: they don't live off advertising, they don't live off TV commercials; they are ordinary people with a mission. In truth, we can call them real missionaries; there, on the edges of a distant world, they are on the front lines, often risking their lives to provide what we all naturally have today, which is food.
